An ode to sedatives

Sedative pills for Teddy: $15 (the vet gave extra for later visits)
A vet visit in which Teddy didn't attempt to bite someone's head off: priceless.

I gave Teddy two pills (as prescribed) two hours before his appointment. Twenty minutes later, Teddy had a glazed look in his eyes. Ten minutes after that, I caught him staring at his feet, like "dude. where did these things come from?" Ten minutes later, he was looking at the stove with a puzzled look on his face.

The vet and her staff were beyond awesome and did everything they could to make Teddy's first real visit comfortable for him, even going so far as to examine him in the waiting room rather than take him to a proper exam room (he doesn't like being in enclosed rooms, for whatever reason, and she said we would just take things slow). He absolutely loved the new vet. Even in his doped up state, he can still charm anybody.

Now we wait for the sedative to wear off. Teddy is a bit tipsy and off-balance, which is uncomfortably close to how Rufus was when he was sick last fall. Teddy tripped and staggered before we went to the vet's office and all I could remember was Rufus's first night in the vet hospital , when he tried to make a break from the intensive care room and went careening into a counter because the tumor made him so dizzy.

Dopey.
The vet said, "Yeah, maybe one and a half pills next time."

Funny, I'm kind of the same way when I take Ativan. I slept through Thanksgiving dinner several years ago when I took one too many pills.

Glad to hear the new vet is working out so well, in any case.

It has to be a pretty terrible feeling to see Teddy behaving the way that Rufus did before you lost him. But I'm SO glad that you found a wonderful vet. That makes a world of difference, and maybe with enough time, Teddy will learn to trust them a little bit more.

I'm sure that dopey dog was a bit traumatic all around, but YAY for a fabulous new vet. You've all earned that, I think!
